This course has been pleasantly designed using the natural terrain with trees and water used to enhance the natural beauty.

The 7th hole has wonderful sea views whilst the 17th hole which is a par 3 is surrounded by a lake and needs the most accurate of tee shots to escape with a decent score.

2. Alcaidersa Links - Area: Punta Mala

Description

This is the closest to an authentic links golf course to be found in the whole of Spain. Opened in 1992, this par 72 course, has a spectacular layout bordering the beach with majestic views of the Rock of Gibraltar and the Atlas mountains of Africa. The course is scattered with gorse and heather, and is great fun to play when there is a soft sea breeze in the air.

The course is not all low lying however as there are some windswept heights together with various water features. A stiff wind can make keeping those drives straight very difficult. The fairways are generously wide, making this course well suited to players of all abilities, and the greens are not oversized or too tricky.

This golf course also hosts its own restaurant and club house, and is near to Gibraltar.

Directions
Alcaidersa Links golf course is at exit KM124.6 on Highway A7 between Sotogrande and La Linea. Leave the highway and travel about 2.5kms to Alaidersa Links.

3. Almenara Golf - Area: Sotogrande

Description

This course can found between Estepona and Gibraltar in Sotogrande. The golf complex is split into three different nine hole courses, Los Alcornoques, Los Pinos and Los Lagos, and golfers can opt to play two out of the three courses for a challenging round of 18 holes.

Originally designed by David Thomas in 1998, a further nine holes were added in 2001 and the combination now offered is widely considered to be pretty much perfect.

The original opening nine, dropping down through cork oak and wild pine trees contrasts with the second nine which starts high up before dropping down to the vast lakes. Some of the tee shots particularly from the most recent nine holes with the lakes coming into play are simply awesome.

The course is set in the upper part of Sotogrande, 500 metres from Valderama and five minutes from the beach.

Directions
From Malaga take the N340 road towards the town of Cadiz. Leave the highway at KM130 and then going inland follow the signposts for Almenara Golf.

4. Atalaya Golf & Country Club - Area: Estepona

Description

There are two courses here; the original old course was designed by Bernhard von Limburger in 1968 and is a classical course formed by a series of superb fairways (Bermuda), strategically-placed bunkers and elevated greens; and the new course which, according to the experts, is a genuine test, as much for beginners as for established players.

The old course is set in classic parkland and has superb, wide fairways bordered by pine, olive and eucalyptus trees, and fast elevated greens. The trees provide welcome shade in summer as well as demanding accuracy – straying into them can cause havoc with your scorecard!

The third hole is a tough par 4. When the pin is in the front of the green, accuracy is imperative as the green narrows there.

The ninth is a good birdie hole for the long hitter to get home in two. Fairway bunkers protect the second shot and the green slopes from left to right.

The fifteenth has a dogleg right. Players can hit a lot more to the left than they realize – too straight and the fairway bunker catches the shot. The second shot is a short iron, but do not be greedy if the pin is right – a large bunker awaits short of the green.

On the final hole aim left of the fairway bunker. A good tee shot leaves the player with a tricky short second. A deep bunker guards the right side.

The new course is as deceptively challenging as the views from it are beautiful. It soon heads into the foothills, then meanders between the fairways of the old course on the way back. The restaurant has a variety of dishes representing the very best of national and international cuisine. At the Ryder Cup Bar, which boasts fabulous views of Marbella, the Mediterranean and Gibraltar, you can enjoy a drink at your leisure.

8. Cabopino Golf - Area: Marbella

Description

Cabopino Golf is one of the Costa del Sol's newest courses and is perched amongst umbrella pines above the marina of the same name. The best way of describing the layout is short and sweet with superb views over the Mediterranean and the surrounding mountains.

Designed by Juan Ligues Creus, the course was opened in April 2001 and features lakes that affect at least four holes. It offers three par 3's, two par 5's and thirteen par 4's in its layout, which is of modern design. The course is young by nature with maturity yet to follow and in view of this the fairways and greens can be quite hard depending whether they have been watered. The course is irrigated by recycled water from a nearby plant and therefore the course condition can change on a day-to-day basis. Look out for this when playing your second shot and the hard ground may mean one less club.

The course does offer a stiff challenge for high handicap players who may find they use every club in the bag. Low handicaps will take more risks in trying to find the large and some of the platformed greens. The signature hole has to be the third where the tee drops dramatically from the side of a cliff to the fairway situated some 200 metres below! A very large bunker also protects the second shot to the elevated green to make it even more difficult. When you have finished your challenging but hopefully satisfying round, why not look in at Cabopino's restaurant Rominos, to enjoy a few refreshments.

On arrival you will find ample parking, club house with excellent changing facilities and good bar and restaurant facilities as mentioned. The pro shop is well stocked and the staff are always extremely helpful. The green fee normally includes a buggy and you should ensure you take advantage of this. It is not an easy walking course. There are practice facilities and tuition can be arranged if required.

Cabopino is a good day out on a new course that is steadily maturing and you will not be disappointed with your visit. Many people make this part of their golfing itinerary, as it is a new complex away from the more popular courses. Well worth a visit!!

9. Club de Golf Valderama - Area: Sotogrande

Description

The Par 71 Championship Course measures 6356 metres from the professional tees. The fairways have been described by top pros and leading golf writers as the best in Europe, if not the world. It is not an easy course - nor was it intended to be. It is designed so as to call forth thought and precision for every shot. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1974, and he is quoted as saying “I think Valderrama is a classic championship golf course. It’s like Augusta..in about as good condition as any golf course can get…” This great course has hosted many Volvo Masters, the first two editions of the World Golf Championships – American Express Championship, as well as the Ryder Cup.

The maximum handicap to play this course is 24 for Men and 32 Ladies, and although amenable to the high handicap golfer, there is a deliberate severity to the course for low handicap golfers. This is primarily due to each hole having six different tee positions which are differentiated not just by distance but also by their siting.

Valderrama is truly one of the greatest courses in Europe and it may be worth mentioning some playing tips from a professional on how best to play this challenging course.

“Consider the large cork oak in the middle of the second fairway to be a help, rather than a hindrance – a tee shot aimed at it and drawn slightly wil give the perfect approach to the green as the fairway slopes from right to left. If the first shot is to the right the second will be difficult due the group of trees that encroaches on the right side of the fairway.

The fourth is a Trent Jones masterpiece. This par 5 combines great shot value with scenic beauty. To reach the green in two demands a long drive, followed by an accurate three wood or long iron to a well guarded two tier green with plenty of water behind and on the right. When aiming for par the player should favour the right side of the fairway with the second shot.

The view from the sixth tee is dramatic, the tee being 8 metres higher than the green, with a complete view of the six bunkers that encroach right up to it. Though large this green is difficult to putt with an upper tier at the back that falls towards the front and right. The target area is therefore small.

The twelfth is arguably the most difficult hole on the course. A thick forest surrounds much of the green, with out of bounds on the right and a severe drop down into the trees on the left. The rear of the green has a slight ridge in the centre.

The eighteenth is a great finishing hole – a dogleg to the left, with the safest landing area straight ahead at about 235 metres. A daring player choosing to fly over the trees on the left instead can set up the easiest approach to a well protected green, which is slightly crowned. It is not easy to duck the challenge of this hole and a player taking an iron off the tee may have too much to do with the second shot”

The course can be found in Sotogrande, and as well as the 18 hole championship course, there is a 9 hole par 3, together with a fantastic practice area. The fabulous clubhouse also hosts an excellent restaurant. Reservations for this course should be made well in advance.

10. Club Miraflores - Area: Miraflores

Description

Miraflores Golf follows the gentle slopes of the Sierra Mijas foothills and affords breathtaking views to the Mediterranean. Designed by Falco Nardi and opened in 1990, the course has recently undergone considerable improvements.

Each of the 18 holes offers a different challenge – on the 5th and 6th for example, the first shot has to carry over water. The 12th is a huge 570 metres, divided by a lake, and there is even more water danger on the 15th where a moat completely surrounds the green.

This is a family orientated club, where young and old, novices and advanced golfers can enjoy the game – from practicing at the Golf Academy; playing in well organized tournaments to socializing in the well appointed clubhouse.

11. Club Golf de Mijas (Los Lagos & Los Olivos) - Area: Mijas Costa

Description

This is a very popular complex with two courses. Los Lagos, the oldest, dates back to 1976 and its one of the largest on the coast. It is characterized by wide fairways, large raised greens and more than a sprinkling of bunkers. It has a very open feel, however, as trees are sparse and there is only a little rough.

In contrast Los Olivos, is shorter and narrower with nowhere near as much water. It is also more undulating and has more trees. The 2nd hole is a difficult par and you need to play half a club more than you think and use the bank at the back of the green.

The 7th is a tricky dogleg; short hitters should stay to the right of the fairway but, with the wind behind them, long hitters can easily carry the water. The second shot is played to a green on two levels – be wary of the lake on the left side.

On the final hole take care with your drive. The fairway runs very fast into the trees on the left. Aim at the bunkers on the right and be prepared for a second shot that is longer than you think over the bunker to the right of the green.

Directions
From Marbella take N-340 in the direction of Malaga, take the exit for Parque Acuatico Mijas and continue to the roundablout, take the road to Coin (MA-426), then follow the signs. From Malaga (Airport), take the A-7 along the coast, pass Fuengirola and then take the Coin exit (MA-426). Follow the signs for 'Campo de Golf' 'Carretera de Coin.

12. Club Lauro Golf - Area: Fuengirola

Description

Lauro golf is on a hillside in the Mijas mountain range in a place of extraordinary beauty. Part of the golf course is in a protected construction free area, where nature and golf bond together.

Inaugurated in 1992, this is recognized as one of the best courses on the coast. Its designer Falco Nardi, has elaborated a mainly flat course, where technique and strategy make it a challenge to players of any handicap.

A second course right next to the existing one was designed by Mariano Benitez and inaugurated in 2003. Its design respects the holm oak forest and the other existing trees.

The par 4, 12th, is practically a 90 degree dogleg to the left. From the white markers it is necessary to shoot through a tunnel of centennial pine trees to an elevated platform, from which one can see the entire Bahía of Málaga. From the yellow markers it is recommended to aim the ball the same way, use of the driver should be avoided as it is most likely to go too far!

The tee shot should be hit above the centennial oak trees that line the left hand side of the fairway. This will allow the ball to land in a clearing between the trees and save some distance for the second shot. It is suicidal to try and aim directly towards the green given the two bunkers that surround it and the quantity of oak and carob trees that stand in the middle of the path in the green’s direction.

The green is very wide and quite shallow, therefore, choice of club for the second shot is very important. The putt is usually fairly easy and if it is within 2 metres, it is best to aim straight.

With out of bounds either side, this long and descending par 5 13th presents a fairly straightforward first shot. However it is important to keep the ball on the fairway which is not that easy depending on the prevailing winds that affect the course at this hole.

The first fairway bunker isn’t too much of an obstacle for big hitters and should only concern those whose drive does not exceed 180 meters. A second shot should leave you in front of another bunker 120 meters from the green.

You must be careful with the third shot here because there is a lake of clay camouflaged by camel grass to the left. Behind the green there is a sand trap that collects the long shots and given that the rough in front of the green is very thick and the club gets stuck easily when hitting the green can lead to an easy birdie opportunity.
The location and design make this course memorable and add variety to the complex.

Directions
Take the N-340 highway and exit at KM192 and head towards the Hotel Don Carlos.

13. Club Santa Maria Golf - Area: Elviria

Description

Santa Maria golf is situated in a superb location on the Costa del Sol between Malaga and Marbella. The country club has a wealth of luxury facilities such as lawn bowls club, gardens, restaurant, terrace bars and lounges and tennis courts. It boasts an 18 hole championship golf course situated at the edge of a luscious forest of pine trees and cork oaks. The first 9 holes were designed by Antonio Garrido with the second 9 being inaugurated in November 1996. The 18 hole course offers players a challenging game in unparalleled surroundings with views across the course to the Mediterranean and to the oak covered mountains. A start has been made on the construction of a further 18 hole course designed by Dave Thomas and the course will be longer and more challenging than the existing one.

The 1st hole is a fairly straightforward par 4 of 289 metres. The tee shot requires clearing a small lake and avoiding the ravine that is to the left of the fairway. A short iron is needed to find the large green which is guarded by three bunkers.

The first par 3 of the round is the 7th hole, measuring 194 metres from an elevated tee. Not surprisingly, not all golfers will hit the putting green in one, especially if hitting into the wind. A shot fired down the left with a slight fade should find the green although a slice will find a heavily wooded area.

Hole 11 is a spectacular par 4 right o left dogleg measuring just 286 metres. The elevated tee is on the highest part of the course and long hitters will have to avoid running into the lake or adjacent bunker – a short iron should find a bunker guarded green which has an attractive waterfall to the right. Behind the 11th green and adjacent to the 12th tee is the “mirador”, where you can take a moment to look around and enjoy the sheer beauty of the setting with views to the Mediterranean.

The prophetically numbered 13th is the third and last of the par 5’s measuring 466 metres. A well hit drive will easily clear the valley in front of the tee leaving the player a choice for his second shot on this long dogleg – either a low to mid iron to play safe, or open your shoulders with a fairway wood for a shorter third shot…the decision is yours – but avoid the water hazard on the right of the fairway.

The 18th, a par 4 of 345 metres, is one of the most demanding closing holes on the coast. The view from the elevated tee is rather intimidating and so the immediate front and left side is a tree lined water hazard. To the right there are more trees and out of bounds lining a high bank. This hole requires a straight shot and a steady swing is important. On finding the fairway a short or mid iron will find a large but sloping green.

14. Club Torrequebrada - Area: Benalmádena

Description

Torrequebrada golf course opened in 1976 having been designed by Jose Gancedo. It is considered one of the best courses in Europe and was host to the 53rd Spanish Open in 1979.

All golfers will enjoy the undulating course and the spectacular views along the coast. The 3rd is a par 3 of no more than 75 metres with high banked bunkers protecting the green short and right. Commit your swing to whichever club selected even though playing to a short distance.

The 300 metre, par 4 7th tee is elevated overlooking the Mediterranean and the fairway 30 metres below. Do not select the driver! Play sensibly and keep focused on the target.

The par 3 11th is played over water to a well protected green with beautiful mature trees behind it. Make sure to take plenty of club to hit the green, avoiding the potential trouble at the front of it.

The 18th which is a par 4 hits towards the clubhouse and nearby mountains. The green is protected by large bunkers and has an undulating putting surface. Hitting from the tee, keep to the left side of the fairway.

After what is bound to have been a both challenging but rewarding game of golf, relax in the restaurant with drinks and a superb menu.

Description
This par 71 course was designed by renowned Malaga architect Antonio Garcia Garrido, the man responsible for many of Spain’s top courses.

The most noticeable feature of this course is the extensive size of the greens, having an average area of 700m2.

The course has two very different layouts being suitable for any type of player. The first 9 holes are longer and more difficult winding between indigenous trees, lakes and rivers whilst the other 9 are more manageable, having a gentle incline and with a close proximity to the sea. An undoubted challenge for golfers of all standards.

 16. El Chaparral Golf - Area: La Cala de Mijas

Description
The variety of holes, surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation, makes The El Chaparral Golf Course an ideal place to play golf.

The word spectacular is the best way to describe playing at El Chaparral.

With its wide and varied greens, exquisite design by Pepe Gancede, El Chaparral has been designed for all types of play. Beginners will not find a better way of practicing this sport, and the experts and professionals will find themselves on a course made for them. Jokingly referred to as the “devils course” the course boasts 6 par 3’s, 6 par 4’s and 6 par 5’s (666!)

Hole one is a par 4 and a taste of things to come, the drive is over a barranca to an uphill fairway. Best to keep the drive slightly to the right hand side of the fairway as a tree on the left blocks out a clear shot to the green. The green is two tiered and if you get above the hole expect a lightening fast putt to a bottom hole location. A great opener!

The 11th is a great par 5 with a snake effect fairway, the drive is tight and you need to find the centre. The second shot is played over trees to an elevated green. Walk up to the green and check where the pin is because if you get above the hole with a pin on the bottom the putt is like lightening, a fantastic hole!

18th is the home hole and the bar awaits! This is a good finishing hole, a long par 3 with a carry over a barranca, if you are going to miss this green miss left and usually the ball kicks down on to the green.

Directions
Take the N-340 and continue to KM204, leave the highway and El Chaparral is about 1.5kms to the North of N340. Coming from the west turn round the first "Cambio de Sentido" after km203 and aproach the turning from the East.

17. El Paraiso - Area: Estepona

Description
Designed by the legendary South African, Gary Player to offer a challenge to golfers at all levels, this course tempts with wide fairways, but punishes those who stray into the bordering heavy rough. Everywhere you look the views are magnificent, from many holes you can see the blue of the mediterranean and there is always the backdrop of the dramatic mountains. Gary Player has used these natural resources brilliantly to create one of the best designed courses on the Costa del Sol.

It also has many water hazards, built on hilly terrain and sloping towards the sea, it winds around two lakes and is peppered with hundreds of trees. The par 5 sixth is undoubtedly the signature hole. It doglegs left and players must avoid two strategically placed bunkers, one on the left and one on the right. Aim the second shot left to avoid a watery grave in one of the lakes. Negotiate these hazards and you are faced with a two tier green.

Without doubt El Paraiso Golf Club is a well designed course that golfers will never tire of playing and will look forward to returning for another chance to conquer!

The club is also justifiably proud of the friendly, social atmosphere enjoyed by members and visitors alike. After your round you can relax and enjoy a refreshing drink or a snack on the clubhouse terrace. If you have worked up an appetite, try one of the tasty dishes from the restaurant.

Directions
Take the N-340 towards KM167, between San Pedro and Estepona. You need to be going west to leave the road at the sign for 'El Paraiso Hotel. From Estepona, change direction at the Benahavis turn and come back to KM167, from here signs for Paraiso Golf Club are displayed. The clubhouse is behind the hotel on the hill.

18. Estepona Golf - Area: Estepona

Description
This course sits in the foothills of the Sierra Bremeja mountain range in Estepona. This course is very popular and the policy is to concentrate on visiting golfers, with a convivial clubhouse and good food.

Not a lengthy course but the long par threes, sloping approaches, many water hazards and dangerous rough compensate for the wide fairways and large greens. The course therefore provides a challenge for players of all levels, but does not penalize the average golfer. There are many palms, eucalyptus and wild olive trees on the course, and players have a great opportunity to enjoy many rare species of wildlife, particularly on the second half.

The design cleverly uses the natural landscape and offers golf in a magnificent setting, with sea views from most of the holes. The par 5 third is particularly tricky with the green way below the tees – a huge 568 metres away.

If you fancy yourself as an accurate hitter you might be tempted to go for the green on the par 4 tenth – all of 250 metres – with the first shot. Beware though, it is downhill, swirls to the left and ends with water on both sides of the green.

The long par 3 fourteenth is daunting. The green lies uphill almost 200 metres away and across a ravine.

The club house is situated near the green of the 18th hole and offers enjoyable views from its terraces towards the sea and the Sierra Bermeja mountains.

Located in the club house are the club offices, the golf shop and the bar & restaurant.

Clubs, trolleys and golf cars can be hired at the caddy desk in the pro shop. Peter Cannon's cuisine, the long bar and the terrace restaurant offer a relaxing atmosphere for the post-round inquest.

Directions
From the N-340 take the exit at KM150 (just passed Estepona). The Estepona Golf course is about 2km from here and should be well signposted.

19. Finca Cortesin Golf - Area: Marbella

Description
Finca Cortesín Golf Club opened in October 2006. It is located in the district of Casares, halfway between Marbella and Sotogrande. Its privileged location offers views over the Mediterranean and the African coastline from every angle. The golf course has been designed by Cabell Robinson. Unlike most of the existing courses in the Costa del Sol area, houses do not interfere with the game. This also means that there is a lot of room for the holes which are not cramped by buildings, so the player can enjoy his golf in a natural environment.

The length of the course reaches nearly 7 km from the back tees, becoming one of the longest courses in Europe, with a total par of 72. There are five par 3’s, eight par 4’s and five par 5’s. The main features are the length of the course and the great variety of its natural vegetation which includes olive trees and corks.

The 18 holes are very unique since every hole is completely different to the others which makes playing very enjoyable. Technically speaking, it is important to emphasize the following features: the Bermuda 419 Grass fairways are very Wide (up to 50 mts.), the bunkers are beautifully shaped and filled with white marble sand. Tee boxes are very high quality (every hole has several tee platforms so the player always finds them in perfect shape). Without doubt, the greens are one of Finca Cortesín jewels, they all have slight breaks and have the quality to be extremely fast. Finca Cortesin also includes a Jack Nicklaus golf academy. This learning method has been personally developed by Jack Nicklaus, an enjoyable and personalized method of teaching, based on matching the swing with the player. The Club House and the remaining sport facilities and services all have an excellent level of quality.

Directions
Coming from Marbella take A7 highway towards Algeciras. Take exit 153 past Estepona; you will reach a roundabout, you must take exit A7 Algeciras-Cadiz. The fourth roundabout has an exit to Casares, take this road and after only 2km you will see Finca Cortesin Golf course on your right.

21. Golf Rio Real - Area: Marbella

Description
Opened in 1965, the Río Real Golf Club is situated in beautiful surroundings. The course, which is just 3 km from the centre of Marbella, lies on a gentle incline which slopes towards the sea, and many of the holes offer magnificent views on the Mediterranean. Designed by Javier Arana, the course, with its exceptional natural surroundings, is not particularly hazardous, despite the fact that the river to which it owes its name crosses it on four occasions.

On the par 3 sixth, be wary of the out of bounds on the right and the river on the left but, with the right club, you should reach the green – if not you will need all your skills to get out of the surrounding bunkers.

Keep left on the par 4 eighth, otherwise you will be hunting for your ball on the ninth fairway, or amongst the dividing palm trees.

On the par 4 tenth don’t worry of you don’t reach the dogleg on the fairway with the first shot – nobody is perfect! Choose your second shot to the green – if you play short it will be much easier. If you decide to go for it – over the pines and hill – hold your breath until fellow players audibly confirm your success – or failure!

The par 5 thirteenth is the longest and most spectacular hole. Imitate Tiger Woods if you dare and reach the green in three strokes!

The Restaurant, decorated by the renowned Pascua Ortega, is the perfect combination of elegance and good taste. Bright, sunny, yet relaxing, and with floor to ceiling windows it is particularly attractive at night.

Río Real is the Restaurant in fashion at lunchtime and evening with panoramic windows overlooking the Golf Course.

Enjoy the wide selection of dishes from the best of Mediterranean cuisine, combining high quality and imagination.

The welcoming Pool Bar is a gathering point for the guest who looks for the exclusive.

The Hotel’s Bar and Lobby are places to enjoy an afternoon tea, or why not relax with a glass of wine or cocktail.

22. Guadalhorce Club de Golf - Area: Malaga

Description
An unusual course, on which the front and back nines are in distinctly different styles.

The first nine is lightly undulating but has difficult greens, and has more of a northern European character.

The second nine has a more transatlantic feel. The greens are mostly raised, and the holes intermingle with lakes and more exotic plants and trees. Some of the holes have shared greens, but most of them are vast anyway.

There is also a nine hole pitch and putt course here which is perfect for those of you who are just beginning the game, or for those who want to improve on their short game whilst enjoying a round.

23. La Cala Golf Resort - Area: La Cala de Mijas

Description
This is the only resort on the Costa del Sol with three 18 hole courses plus a six hole par 3 course.

La Cala North, on uneven and mountainous landscape, is considered suitable for top players. Some of the greens are in the elevated American style, where placing must be precise, and some fairways cause problems since they are inclined. This course calls for intense concentration.

It starts with the three flattest holes of the resort, followed by a narrow and interesting par 3, where it is recommended to hit the ball onto the green, otherwise you will find yourself in either a ravine or a bunker. Watch out for the 6th, a difficult uphill index 1 hole – a good drive is imperative.

A walk up to the white tee box on the 16th is rewarded by spectacular views of the entire resort – and even the coastline. Good luck crossing the lake on this par 3 hole. The 18th is also interesting, being downhill all the way to the 19th!

The South course is also spectacular. The 1st, 9th, 10th and 18th are located beside the clubhouse. Two interesting holes with water hazards are the 5th and 12th. The par 3 11th is picturesque, but watch where you hit the ball on the 9th or you might end up in trouble.

A lot of attention was paid to the surrounding wildlife when the newest 18, Campo Europa, was constructed. Native plant species such as Lavender, Rockrose, Rosemary and Palmettos were planted as well as groves of trees and 1,500 bushes.

The Ojen river plays a role on 8 holes and cuts across 3 fairways; the river is crossed by a main bridge and four smaller ones. The design also features four tunnels for golf carts. Course designer, Cabell B. Robinson, stresses the advantages for the average golfer. “The new course is not only dramatic but will also be easier for the average golfer. The fairways are generous from the tees and the greens are slightly larger than on the existing courses.”

All in all La Cala is a terrific resort for golfers of all standards. In addition to the golf courses already mentioned, the resort hosts a five star hotel; various restaurants and bars; David Leadbetter golf academy; driving range, putting and chipping green; floodlit tennis courts; squash court; fitness club; sauna; indoor and outdoor swimming pools and of course the pro shop.

Directions
Take the N-340 from Malaga and exit at KM201 towards La Cala de Mijas village. Turn right at the roundabout and follow the signs to the La Cala Resort. 24. La Canada Golf - Area: Sotogrande

Description
Unusually this is a municipal course, as these are few and far between on the Costa del Sol. It is well worth a visit, but advanced booking is essential as the locals get preference.

This is a wonderful story of a village that wanted a golf course. Guadiaro used to send its men to the fields to work, then along came Sotogrande golf club. Many of the village workers then gave up the work in the fields to become greenkeepers and naturally took up the game of golf. Before long there were more golfers in Guadiaro that in any village of its size in Spain.

The villagers asked for one hole to use for practice, but once they had one they asked for more, and more. They hacked out a mountainside track and the kids practised near the football pitch. Jaime Ortiz Patino got interested, the municipality gave the land, Robert Trent Jones Sr. did the design and La Canada was built!

Over a decade later, the second nine holes was opened, this time designed by David Thomas. Now that’s some municipal golf course!

This course is situate in Sotogrande approximately 2 kilometres inland from the A7.

25. La Duquesa Golf & Country Club - Area: Estepona

Description
This is one of the Costa del Sol’s most spectacular and varied courses. With long fairways, the front and back nines offer two distinctly different challenges.

The front nine has narrow fairways and high greens. The fourth hole, with its magnificent views is particularly beautiful, but can easily cause trouble on your scorecard. The second nine is easier, with wide fairways although the greens can present additional difficulties. They provide spectacular views over Puerto de la Duquesa, to the mountains and to Gibraltar. The view from the fifteenth hole even stretches as far as Marbella.

Situated in Manilva, just alongside the Puerto de la Duquesa, The Duquesa Golf Country Club consists of a large number of sport facilities. In the Clubhouse you will be able to enjoy the exquisite dishes offered by the Restaurant; rest or read in the television room; play a game of billiards, or relax in our Spa having a massage, sauna, Jacuzzi or Turkish bath.

For tennis and swimming fans the club has 3 tennis courts and an indoor swimming pool.

27. La Reserva - Area: San Roque

Description
La Reserva, boasts a majestic Andalucian-style clubhouse nearly as big as a hotel. Remarkably mature despite its youth, the 7,350-yard course's flawless conditioning only underscores the design's seamless artistry and lovely hillside setting. Designed by Cabell B.Robinson the course contains fingered bunkers, generous fairway corridors and large but intricate greens.

The uphill, par-4 opening hole nods slyly toward the first at Royal Portrush, and lucky golfers who have played on Maui should get several pleasurable shivers of déjà vu. About the only quibble would be two weak, if beautiful, short par 3s on the back nine, which underscore La Reserva's positioning as a spectacular resort layout more so than a cold-blooded championship test.

Description
Its 18-hole, 5,906-metre, par-72 course, designed by the prestigious couse architect Antonio Garcia Garrido is characterised by its carefully conserved landscaping, with a large variety of trees and beautiful views of the Mediterranean.

The greens are generously sized whilst its fairways are somewhat narrower on the front nine, where more precision playing is required than on the back nine. The bunkers are white marmolina sand. The fairways are sown with Bermuda, except on certain holes where grass has been used, whilst the greens and tees have been sown with Pencross.

This course also has a 9 hole par 3 which is currently developing a further 9 holes. There are also two further 18 hole courses in the process of being built to create a world class golfing resort. The Villa Padierna Hotel which sits amongst the course is of the highest standard.

30. Los Naranjos Golf Club - Area: Nueva Andalucia

Description
Robert Trent Jones Sr. built designed and built this course in the middle of the 1970’s and the beautiful clubhouse, inaugurated in 1991, has a welcoming atmosphere and large orange groves. The tees are terraced and long with wide expansive fairways on the front nine and undulating greens. The first hole is short with a dog-leg right to an elevated green and huge bunkers on the right hand side of fairway. Aim tee-shot to the left side of fairway. At the third hole you need a long tee-shot to reach the green with your second shoot. Take "one club extra" for the approach - it's up hill and the undulated green is guarded by a huge cross bunker.

The fifth is a short par 5 with an elevated green. Aim for the right side of the fairway to avoid the water hazard on the left. After a long drive you can try to go for the green with your second shoot!

When playing the ninth don't hit your tee-shot into the huge bunker on the left side of the fairway, though it's tempting to gain a few meters that way. After a good tee-shot you still have a long iron left to the green. Five is a good result.

The tenth is a long par four with the green sloping from right to left after a narrow entrance. Aim your tee-shot to the left side of the fairway, and your second shot to the right of the flag.

The twelfth is a beautiful par 3 with a green guarded by a small lake on the right side and a couple of huge bunkers on the left side. Be happy if you hit the green from the tee!

The fifteenth is a short par 4 that looks deceptively easy! Be aware of the big lake on the left side of the fairway. Place the ball safely on the right hand side of the fairway (without ending up in one of the bunkers between semi-rough and the fairway!). Maybe an iron is a clever choice from tee?

The famous finishing hole at Los Naranjos is a long par 5 with the club house behind the green. Before reaching the green you have several problems to handle - not least the lakes you have to cross before you can finally hole out after an enjoyable game.

Los Naranjos Golf Club is extremely proud of its restaurant, open from early morning until dark every day of the year. Here you can enjoy breakfast in the morning, a full meal between 12pm and 4pm from an impressive menu; have a beer (or two) in the bar after the game; or if you are visiting the Club on Sunday - why not go for the Grand Open Sunday Buffet, well-known all over the Costa del Sol! The restaurant terrace overlooks the green of the 18th hole - a beautiful place to enjoy a good meal and excellent service!

31. Monte Mayor Golf Club - Area: Benhavis

Description
At Monte Mayor Golf & Country Club you are in a world of your own. This beautiful community, sheltered in an idyllic valley oasis, is surrounded by mountains, waterfalls, and rich flora and fauna. Every vantage point offers spectacular views over the sparkling Mediterranean to the African coastline. The project is located in the Benahavís region, one of the most picturesque yet still relatively undiscovered areas of the Costa del Sol.

The Monte Mayor golf course became an instant legend from the moment it opened in 1989. Spectacularly located and captivatingly beautiful, it inspires the utmost respect and admiration in golfers from around the world. Many of them are drawn back, time and again, in a determined effort to conquer this amazing course. Few succeed, but playing Monte Mayor is an experience no one will ever forget. It is widely acknowledged as one of Europe’s premier golfing experiences.

Created by the renowned course designer José Gancedo, this golf course is probably unlike any you have ever played before. Nestled in a natural amphitheatre created by the Serrania de Ronda Mountains, the greens have not been shaped by bulldozers, but by the wild Andalusian nature. With its exciting fairway that winds through dramatic gullies, ravines and streams, Monte Mayor offers a superb challenge to even the most experienced golfers.

This is target golf with fairly lenient rules that favour the brave; any lost ball is considered to be in a side water hazard.

The long seventh hole has the tee on a raised platform from which the drive must land on an isolated plateau; the second shot must be aimed at another and the green is located by a lake with a small waterfall.

The seventeenth offers the chance to use any club from the bag.

After your round you can enjoy the stylish, recently renovated Clubhouse and the La Perla Golf Café – the perfect place to meet friends and enjoy a drink or delicious meal from the extensive international menu.

Directions
Take the N340 and exit at KM165.6 going towards Benahavis. Go passed the Atalaya Golf Course and continue driving, you will go through a tunnel, further along about 1km you will see a tower to the right and the Marbella Golf Club resort directly opposite. Turn left through the gates and follow the road for 5km until you reach a junction, turn right go passed the resort's Golf Course and continue for 4.5 km to Monte Mayor Golf and Country Club.

32. Parador de Golf Malaga - Area: Malaga

Description
Inauguarated in 1925 by the Spanish Royal family, Malaga's El Parador del Golf is the Costa del Sol's oldest course. It is easy to find right next to Malaga airport and well signposted from all directions. It is enjoyed by visitors with many electing to play here as their last game before they return home.

Designed by Tom Simpson, who also includes Muirfield and Turnberry amongst his portfolio, the course is part links with sea lagoons and part parkland with the fairways forming avenues between the trees. You will be well entertained here by the flocks of colourful parakeets that have made their home in the trees. Set right on the beach you have magnificent views of the Mediterranean and the fairways are wide for the big hitters. Beware if the breeze gets up as this can easily catch you out. On some fairways the trees can interfere and you will need to position your golf ball accordingly.

Some holes present a real challenge but all in all this is a good test of golf for any standard. The Parador has hosted many championship events and amongst them the Turespana Masters has to be the most prestigious. The course has the quality and maturity, which makes a visit well worthwhile and very enjoyable. Why not try this on the way back from your next golfing holiday.

The 12th is the most difficult par 5 on the course. A very complicated tee shot between large trees, a second shot that leaves no room for error and a shot to an elevated green with a large streambed in front and steep slopes.

The 14th is a recovery par 5, although a bad drive will be heavily punished by sandy rough that is difficult to play out of. The green is surrounded by water demanding a very straight shot.

The 18th is one of the most difficult par 4’s on the Costs del Sol. A double dogleg leads to trouble for drives straying to the left into a forest of large trees. The birds’ nests at the tee shot make concentration impossible.

A refreshment stand serving tapas awaits players to celebrate the result.

33. Santana Golf & Country Club - Area: La Cala de Mijas

Description
Situated at between La Cala de Mijas and Fuengirola Santana Golf Course and Country Club lies with breathtaking views of the Mijas mountains, close to the Mediterranean sea. Set within groves of oranges and avocados, truly a place where 'nature and golf are one' Santana Golf & Country Club is an 18 Hole golf course par 72 of approx. 6203 metres (just under 7000 yards) in length, set in 138 acres of picturesque parkland. The course, sympathetically laid out by the architect Cabell B. Robinson, is set in a former avocado plantation which provided a natural solution to many problems. The final result is a magnificent course with wide and well defined fairways on level terrain, hence easily walkable, where water features play an important albeit not excessive part in the overall design. Each hole has two championship tees and two tees for general play for both men and ladies– wide and well manicured putting greens surrounded by strategically placed bunkers, filled with sand produced from crushed marble. Buggy paths are provided throughout the course, beautifully integrated between the rows of fruit trees. In spite of its previous use, the Avocado Tree or Persea Índica -as it is known by its original name-, is not the only tree present here, as many other endemic species like eucalyptus, orange and lemon trees, cactus, pines, fig trees, olive and mango trees make up the varied vegetation of this beautiful enclave, together with a varied population of indigenous birds, with amongst others the calzada eagle. The cork oaks along the 5th hole deserve special mention, as they have been present here for more than 500 years.

The beautiful environment with its natural surrounding will give the golfer the overriding impression of an existing maturity in every aspect of the course. However, it is not only the beauty of the landscape and its flora and fauna that will impress the player, as the golf course itself has been provided with the best attributes to please the most discerning golfer. The course has been constructed with the best means available and can boast automatic irrigation throughout the layout, as well as a sophisticated drainage system which will keep the number of days the course could be closed due to adverse weather conditions to a minimum.

Santana Golf is technically speaking a demanding course as the unique design of each hole is intended to give a continuous challenge, even for the more experienced player. The layout of the greens, well protected by greenside bunkers, as well as the many water hazards spread throughout the course, will challenge every golfer and require good course management as well as the use of every golf shot in the bag.

It is difficult to speak of a signature hole at Santana Golf as they all have something special to offer. The long Par-4 18th is one of the most demanding finishing holes along the coast according to the designer, with the lake along the right hand side and a narrow approach to the green. The 4th hole can only be defined with one word: spectacular. The views from the tee are magnificent and the ‘Campillos’ stream provides a challenging approach to the green; or what about the 8th hole, with a length of 595 metre (650 yards) considered to be the longest hole of the Costa del Sol and favouring the longer hitter; not to forget the 12th Par 3, playing downhill, with a very large undulating green, many a golfer would be happy to walk away with a three here... One of the most outstanding features of Santana Golf is without a doubt the variety in design, as each and every hole is differentiated by its own characteristics.

To sum it all up, we are dealing here with a magnificent and spectacular course, where all these combined elements, together with the superb climate of the area and the expertise of the staff, turn Santana Golf into a course beyond your dreams.

34. Santa Clara Golf - Area: Marbella

Description
Located near the hospital on the eastern side of Marbella, Santa Clara Golf Club is an 18 hole par 71 course of 5878 metres from the professional tees. The course was designed by Enrique Canales Busquets, and opened in 2001. It is well manicured and noted for its long par 3’s and comfortably sized greens. The front nine has two par 3s, 6 par 4s and one par 5. The longer back nine has two par 3s, five par 4s and 2 par 5s. Water comes into play on many holes and there are bunkers protecting most of the greens. Santa Clara Golf Club provides a challenge for all levels of golfers.

A mostly flat course, there is a steep climb on the eighth, leading to the ninth – from where there are spectacular views of the Mediterranean.

Santa Clara hosted the 58th Annual Spanish Professional Championship in June 2003, quite an honour for a new course and indicative of the quality and prestige Santa Clara has been able to achieve in a short time.

35. San Roque Golf Club - Area: Marbella

Description
This complex now represents one of the best golf resorts in Europe, boasting two wonderful 18 hole golf courses. The old course’s tight, sloping fairways are lined by mature cork oak trees which demand straight, accurate driving. Strategic bunker placement and deceptive water hazards threaten all but the most precise of approach shots.

The back nine crosses rolling hills and some plunging carries that will test the players’ judgement of distance to the limit. The maximum handicaps on this testing course are 24 for men and 32 for ladies.

The new course offers a very different challenge. Each hole has five different tee positions and fairways that are wider than those on the old course. These fairways are designed to reward thoughtful tactics and clever placement of your drive. Water hazards guard four of the greens together with a multitude of strategic bunkers, which lie in wait for any errant shots.

The complex boasts a fabulous 5 star hotel and can be found a kilometre inland between Estepona and Gibraltar.

36. Sotogrande Club de Golf - Area: Sotogrande

Description
This is one of the earliest courses to be designed on the Costa del Sol by Robert Trent Jones. That it has matured magnificently is best appreciated in the view from the 12th tee.

At the first hole the lake is out of bounds for most players. Aim your drive to the centre of the fairway. The green is slightly elevated, necessitating a slightly longer second shot. Any shot long and left of the flag will leave the player with a very quick putt.

The third is short, but tricky. Aim your drive left and short of the fairway bunkers. The green is a four leaf clover with a severe slope to the front and right. A recovery shot from behind the green is nearly impossible, try to leave an uphill putt.

The seventh is widely considered the best on the course. It doglegs to the left with out of bounds on the same side. A precise second shot is required to a narrow, well guarded green.

The thirteenth is unlucky for many! A watery grave awaits any shot to the right or over the green. Just in case you play too safe, though, the bunker on the left awaits. The good news is that the green is not difficult.

The final hole is long, with a slight incline and has the widest fairway on the course. The out of bounds on the left should not come into play. Although it does not appear to be very much uphill on the second shot it is rare to see people over the green.

Located in the province of Cadiz and 2 miles from its neighbour Valderrama Golf Club and 150 metres from the Mediterranean Sea, at the luxury urbanization of Sotogrande. Ranked in the 100 Greatest Courses in the World by the GolfWeb Editorial staff and ranked number 5 in Europe. Signature holes are numbers 7 and 12, which are considered by many as two of the most beautiful holes in the world.

The maximum handicap for Men is 24 and for Ladies 30. In addition to the 18 hole course there is also an executive 9 hole par 3 course.

Club facilities include Bar and Cafeteria, Restaurant, swimming pool with bar, tennis and paddle tennis and a gymnasium.

37. The Golf Club Marbella - Area: Marbella

Description
A typical Robert Trent Jones designed course, with many bunkers and large greens approached from sweeping fairways. Little valleys, ravines and gullies trap the unwary on the first few holes.

The 4th hole, a par 3, is just tee and green with everything in between bandit country! The 11th, also requires particular care. It has a sharp dogleg right, amidst valleys and hills. The reward is the magnificent sea view from the 12th tee.

Directions
Take the N340 and exit at KM188.
