An intro to the Mijas Costa area of the Costa del Sol

Mijas Costa - Sun, Sand and Watersports
Just as Mijas village is serenity, tradition and culture, so Mijas Costa equals that magic combination of sun, sand and water sports. The beaches at La Cala have been awarded the "Blue Flag" as among the best in the province and are geared to provide action: jet skis, water skiing and parascending are all on the go.

The Mijas municipality covers an impressive two major urbanisations, Calahonda and Riviera del Sol. The former is informally known as the English village in Spain and the place to come for second hand shops, British doctors and dentists, Indian restaurants, imported foods and, naturally enough, a plentiful choice of pubs. The nearby Riviera del Sol is similarly inviting and popular among foreigners. The sports centre is also well equipped and includes an 18 hole golf course and thriving tennis club. Mijas Costa also boasts some of the coasts more famous golf courses.

Mijas Pueblo is a typical Andaluz village, perched high above Fuengirola and Mijas Costa with spectacular views of the coast and surrounding heavily wooded mountains. Known as the white village, Mijas is situated at the foothills of the Cordón Montañoso del Litoral (Coastal Mountain Range).

The coastal area is highly developed for tourism, even in the small coves where the mountains reach down to the sea. Arriving from the old road that unites Mijas with Benalmadena, one passes the large lookout point opening to the sea, amidst pines and ornamental plants between the summer houses along the coastline. Mijas pueblo is typical Andaluz in its character and there are no main thoroughfares here, instead a web of narrow cobbled streets complete with terraces overflowing with geraniums, red tile roofs and archways.

The village has managed to retain some of its quaint traditions, one of the most unusual being the donkey-taxis which line the central plaza. Like Ronda just over the mountain top, the village dates back to distant time and there are two Mudejar churches here to prove it, as well as the sanctuary of the patron saint of Mijas, dating from the year 850. During the month of January, Mijas holds their festival of San Anton which is celebrated with a romeria (open air party) at the holy hermitage and is reached in carriages and on carts, piled high with flowers and food.

Mijas is an excellent golfing area and has some of the most peaceful and tranquil settings you will ever come across. La Cala Golf & Country Club overlooking the mountains, has an international reputation as one of the finest golfing complexes in the world and is extremely popular with visiting golfers of all nationalities. Then just outside Fuengirola lies the outstanding Mijas Golf complex famous for its manicured grounds. During the last decade, Mijas Golf has become one of the most popular golf complexes in Europe, known by the outstanding condition of their courses and the friendly atmosphere and excellent service provided to the clients. The courses, Los Lagos and Los Olivos, are situated in the valley of Mijas, just north of Fuengirola.

The abundance of facilities and warm climate makes Mijas absolutely ideal for sport lovers. For children, aqua-parks, zoos, theme parks and nature centres abound, no child can be bored with life in Mijas. There is also Go-karting, jeep safaris, ballooning, mountain climbing and you can enjoy water sports -swimming, sailing, boating, jet skiing, and also track and field sports. There are sports complexes, football fields and gyms all over the coast open all year round. If the sea attracts you you will find sub aqua and sailing clubs all along the coast.

Between Mijas and Fuengirola, by the national road A7, is located the water park, one of the most visited in the whole of the Costa del Sol. This is a family friendly waterpark where you'll find a wonderful world of wild water, whirling rides and waterslides. For the little ones there is the colorful waterplay area "Aqualandia", specially designed for them. Aquatic attractions include: Slides, rivers, Kamikase, wave pool, Blue Lake swimming pool, kiddie slides, body ski and Jacuzzi's.
