Mijas is a typical Andaluz village with stunning views
Mijas is a typical Andaluz village, perched high above Fuengirola and Mijas Costa with spectacular views of the coast and surrounding heavily wooded mountains. Known as the white village, Mijas is situated at the foothills of the Cordón Montañoso del Litoral (Coastal Mountain Range).
The coastal area is highly developed for tourism, even in the small coves where the mountains reach down to the sea. Arriving from the old road that unites Mijas with Benalmadena, one passes the large lookout point opening to the sea, amidst pines and ornamental plants between the summer houses along the coastline. Mijas pueblo is typical Andaluz in its character and there are no main thoroughfares here, instead a web of narrow cobbled streets complete with terraces overflowing with geraniums, red tile roofs and archways.
The village has managed to retain some of its quaint traditions, one of the most unusual being the donkey-taxis which line the central plaza. Like Ronda just over the mountain top, the village dates back to distant time and there are two Mudejar churches here to prove it, as well as the sanctuary of the patron saint of Mijas, from the year 850. During the month of January, Mijas holds their festival of San Anton which is celebrated with a romeria (open air party) at the holy hermitage and is reached in carriages and on carts, piled high with flowers and food.
On a culinary note, the traditional local fare includes gazpachuelo (an egg soup) and for those with a sweeter tooth, there are the typical cakes made with almonds, called bunuelos and homazos. There are also a multitude of excellent Spanish and international restaurants in Mijas to choose from.
Mijas is an excellent golfing area and has some of the most peaceful and tranquil settings you will ever come across. La Cala Golf & Country Club overlooking the mountains, has an international reputation as one of the finest golfing complexes in the world and is extremely popular with visiting golfers of all nationalities.
