The Golden Mile of the rich and famous
The prestigious Golden Mile is situated just minutes drive from both Marbella and Puerto Banus. It has many designer shops and top quality restaurants. The Saudi palace can also be found here near the Puente Romano 5 Star Hotel. There are also lots of nightclubs within this area.
As one leaves the center of Marbella heading west one travels along the famous Golden Mile, so called for the palatial beach front villas that make the area one of the most expensive real estate in Europe. The Golden Mile is also home to Marbella Club Hotel, founded in the 1950's, the five star luxury hotel founded Marbellas reputation as a playground for the rich and famous. Nowadays celebrities and dignities abound, including the like of the now deceased King Fahd of Saudi Arabia, who has a summer palace and mosque on the Golden Mile.
The west end of the Golden Mile is Puerto Banus which is famous for its marina and the many luxury yachts moored there. Puerto Banus which offers some of the most famous haute couture shops, boutiques of all kinds and colourful bric-a-brac shops, turning into a lively cosmopolitan port in the evening, blessed with an abundance of bars and clubs to suit all tastes. For the golf aficionadoes there is a wide range of golf courses in the vicinity.
Marbella is a truly luxurious resort which seems to have it all and is a favourite location with the rich and famous, as well as more ordinary folk who are willing to pay just a little bit extra for southern Spains answer to St Tropez.
The Marbella coastline stretches along some 26 kilometres of sandy beaches from Guadalmina to Cabopino bathed by the Mediterranean and where you can enjoy traditional fish and seafood favorities like Paella, sardines on a spit, and fried fish to name a few. Marbella has a down to earth side as well which can be best appreciated by exploring the back streets in the old part of town. When visiting Orange Square, or "La Plaza de los Naranjos", as it is called in Spanish, you will find stately buildings, small shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants which are alive with activity both day and night. There are numerous excellent restaurants to choose from, ranging from those specialising in cordon bleu to the backstreet Spanish bar where you can experience a huge selection of tapas or taste Serrano ham gently cured by tobacco smoke.
