Benissa - spanish tradition awaits you
Benissa on the Costa Blanca is just five minutes from the lovely coast La Fustera between Calpe and Moraira where there are numerous bars and restaurants.
Benissa is just a forty minutes drive from Alicante airport. It has over 4 kilometres of coast which has proportioned it with a wide range of activities like quiet coves hidden among pine trees or beaches found after climbing done a small cliff. Some of these hot spots are: Els Pinets, el Abogat, el Baladrar, Els Pinets and La Fustera.
Benissa is steeped in monuments. As you stroll down the centre of the historic area, you feel as though you have come upon a huge museum made up of gorgeous buildings and narrow streets that talked of history. In Portal Square there is a very old hospital that had been built for the poor in the 1790's. In Purissima Street, there is an old church which had the appearance more of a fortification from the 14th century with a Neo-gothic style. On the right side of this same street there are two noble buildings where there is a branch of the university called Casa Andrew. A few houses away, is the oldest building in Benissa – the Lonja from the XVI century where on the top floor trials were held and on the lower floor important business transactions were carried out and is now the Ethnological Museum.
In the Jaume I Square is the imposing and enormous dimensions of the Cathedral of the Pure Mother Mary, symbol for Benissa, its patron Saint and above all, made by the people from there. Its local festivity for their patron saint is the fourth Sunday in April.
Every town and village, no matter how far or close they are to each other has a special dish for the hungry to try and Benissa is no exception. Benissa speciality, being true to where it is located, is a stew made with octopus. If this is not to your taste buds, try one of the rice dishes will definitely suit you, and don't forget the array of local wines on offer.
Close by is Calpe is a very well known town on the Costa Blanca, with its amazing landmark that is the 'Penon de Ifach'. This is a gigantic granite rock towering over 600 metres high. The rock is right on Calpe beach.
Calpe is definitely a big bustling town far removed from it's origins as a tiny fishing village. On each side of the rock are two fantastic sandy beaches and this is the reason why most people come to holiday hear. the beaches are of a very high quality sand and the waters are clean. The beaches are so long and wide that unlike the neary town of Benidorm, you can always find a spot on the beach. The facilities on the beaches are excellent with many play areas for the children right on the beach itself.
